Before the season starts: choosing adjustable or fitted

Getting the fit decision right at ordering stage saves headaches later, especially when you are outfitting a squad rather than one person.

• Adjustable caps (snapback, strapback or velcro) suit junior teams, mixed squads and clubs with regular player turnover. One size genuinely does fit most, which matters when your roster changes every season.
• Fitted caps sit lower and cleaner on the head, which is why a lot of senior teams like them for finals, presentation days or representative sides where the squad is locked in and everyone can be measured.
• If your club has both junior and senior grades, it is worth ordering different styles for each rather than trying to make one style work for everybody. Washing embroidered caps without ruining them

This is the step most clubs get wrong, usually by tossing caps straight into the washing machine or dishwasher after someone read a hack online. Embroidered caps have structure, a brim, and stitching that does not love being tumbled or soaked in hot water.

• Spot clean first. Most sweat marks and general grime come out with a soft brush, a bit of mild detergent and cold water applied directly to the affected area.
• If a full clean is needed, hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent. Avoid bleach and avoid hot water, both of which fade colours and can shrink the fabric unevenly.
• Never wring a cap. Rinse it out gently and press excess water out with a clean towel instead.
• Air dry only, away from direct sun or heat. A cap dryer, an upturned bowl, or even a clean tin can inside the crown will help it hold its shape while drying. Never use a clothes dryer, it will warp the brim and can melt any heat sealed elements.
• Keep embroidered logos facing away from anything abrasive during washing and drying. Embroidery is generally hardwearing, but repeated rough handling will shorten its life.

Keeping shape between games

A cap that has lost its shape looks tired even if it is perfectly clean, and for a club, a slouchy or crushed brim across the whole team looks unco ordinated on game day.

• Store caps brim up, not squashed flat in the bottom of a kit bag. A simple caddy, pegboard or even a row of hooks in the clubroom works well for shared team caps.
• Avoid sitting on caps or stuffing them into pockets. It sounds obvious, but it is the single most common cause of a warped brim.
• Encourage players to remove caps before contact drills or when caps are not in use, rather than leaving them on and getting crushed under other gear.
• For pre curved brims, avoid bending them the opposite way to reshape. It stresses the material and eventually cracks the brim insert.

Sizing tips specific to junior and senior squads

Getting sizing right matters more for clubs than for an individual buying one cap, because you are working across a spread of head sizes and often ordering once for the whole season.

• For junior teams, adjustable caps with a decent range on the strap or snap fastening are almost always the safer bet, since head sizes vary widely at that age.
• For senior or representative squads, take actual head measurements where practical rather than guessing from standard sizing charts, particularly if you are ordering fitted caps that cannot be resized later.
• If your club has a policy of players keeping their caps for multiple seasons, order slightly roomier where there is any doubt, since fabric can shrink marginally with washing over time.

End of season refresh

Most clubs find it worth doing a stocktake at the end of the season while the caps are fresh in everyone’s mind. Check for caps that are faded, embroidery that has come loose, or brims that have not held their shape despite good care, and separate those from caps still fit for another year.
