Picture this. A daycare centre in Toowoomba has 34 toddlers starting the summer term and a sun safety policy that says every child needs a broad brimmed hat before they can step outside. The centre director has a logo, a colour scheme, and no idea where to start because the last time she ordered hats, the supplier wanted a minimum of 200 units. She needs 34. Kids caps and hats are a genuinely different product category to adult headwear, not just a smaller version of it. Getting them right involves different sizing, different safety considerations, and often much smaller order quantities than a corporate uniform run. Here is how we approach it, and what any school, daycare or club should know before placing an order.
A child’s head shape and circumference change significantly between toddler age and upper primary, so a cap that fits a five year old comfortably will sit awkwardly on a ten year old, and vice versa. Good kids headwear needs proper adjustable closures, whether that is a soft strap and buckle on a bucket hat or a snapback and velcro tab on a cap, so one size genuinely covers a wider age range without being loose enough to blow off in the wind or tight enough to leave a mark.
Fabric choice matters too. Kids are outdoors more, sweat more, and are harder on their gear, so we lean towards hats with a UPF rating and breathable, quick drying fabrics for daycare and school orders. Most bulk headwear suppliers set a minimum order quantity because it makes their production more efficient. For daycare and early primary, bucket hats and wide brim hats tend to work best because they shade the neck and ears, which sun safety policies usually require for younger children who cannot yet reliably reapply sunscreen or seek shade on their own. For upper primary and high school students, a structured cap with an adjustable strap gives better coverage for sport and outdoor lessons while feeling a bit more grown up. Come winter, plenty of schools and clubs also order kids sized beanies for cooler mornings and outdoor training sessions.
Turnaround from proof approval is typically around two weeks, though this can shift depending on order size, decoration method and whether you have chosen local or offshore production. The main thing we ask is that centres and schools do not leave the order until the week before term starts. Building in a bit of buffer means there is time to review the proof properly, request any tweaks, and still have hats in hand before the first assembly or excursion.
